Alex Tanney has jumped over Kyle Lauletta, will be Giants’ backup against Titans

Giants QB Kyle Lauletta‘s time as Eli Manning‘s backup is over, at least for now.

A week after struggling badly in his professional debut, Lauletta is inactive with Alex Tanney serving as Manning’s backup as the Giants face the Titans at MetLife Stadium. Lauletta had been the backup for two weeks.

During Week 14’s blowout win over the Redskins, Lauletta went 0-for-5 with an interception, badly missing his receivers and looking like a deer in the headlights at times.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur had questioned a reporter in late-November prior to inserting Lauletta as the backup, after the reporter wondered why Lauletta hadn’t yet gotten a chance.

“Why are you jumping over Tanney?” Shurmur said. “I think you try to win each game and as we go forward here, you make your decision based on winning the game. You base your decision on putting a team on the field that gives you the best chance to win the game. I get that. As a coach I stay in the moment. We certainly have conversations as to what runs parallel — the short-term and the long-term.”

With the 5-8 Giants still alive for the playoffs, going with the veteran Tanney as the backup over Lauletta (even though Tanney hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2015) make sense.

Lauletta, who had a run-in with police earlier this season due to a traffic violation, was taken by the Giants in the fourth round (108th overall) of the NFL Draft in April.

Meanwhile, while the Giants have gotten a small glimpse at what Lauletta can do and might turn to a QB in the NFL Draft, Manning could return as the starter in 2019
