After the New York Giants selected Duke quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, there was a backlash of anger and resistance among the fan base.
The Giants’ fan base is wide-ranging and includes people from all walks — other sports, entertainment, politics and yes, the media. Count iconic sports radio host Mike Francesa in that group.
On his Friday show on WFAN, Francesa blasted the Giants for bypassing “superior” defensive players such as Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen and defensive lineman Ed Oliver of Houston.
“They don’t have enough players to be good. They didn’t get the pass rusher they needed. They have massive holes to fill. They sent away good players. I thought they had a plan. It’s a bunch of garbage. If you’re in love with the quarterback then put him out there, let him play, and you should have used your assets by getting rid of Eli and use that money to get more players because the Giants would like to be the new doormats of the league, which they have become over the last six years. The Giants now act like losers. They have no plan like losers. The people running the team in my estimation are losers. I don’t believe a word Gettleman says. He lied to everybody about what he was doing. When teams start talking about next year in the middle of this year it’s because they don’t know what the hell they are doing. This group doesn’t know what the hell they are doing.
“They have become one of the laughingstocks in the NFL and have one of the worst records in the league in the last six years. Face it…the Giants have become football clowns. They’re chronic losers now.”
It was hard to argue against Francesa’s point. The Giants are truly operating in a bubble and are tuning out many realities they truly need to confront. But that doesn’t mean he gets to deride the team without a response or a rebuttal.
Carl Banks, the former championship linebacker and current Giants radio analyst, shot back at Francesa and challenged the Giants at the same time on his Twitter account.
“Oh my!” was Banks’ initial response to Francesa. “Clearly they didn’t seek his advice before making draft decisions… Oh Well… the season starts in September.”
Then Banks must have rethought his response and came back a little harsher.
“There are enough uninformed opinions here on twitter.. the beauty of sports is that every player has a chance to alter the NARRATIVE and make fools of of everyone. Funny how everyone is bent over players that they wanted…players that haven’t played a single PRO snap.”
Instead of going after Francesa, Banks decided to challenge the Giants instead.
“I don”t play anymore neither does Michael Strahan, LT, Harry all of us Captains.. but i assure you this statement would be personal.. If this current team accepts this as fact I would be greatly disappointed that they would validate this statement. Cc Captain’s Ogletree DeOssie…Your mission is crystal clear..Your bosses have been called “losers” & by proxy that means you will share this label bc they picked you.. You can validate this narrative or not… Will you take it personal?
Banks is a class act but usually shoots straight. He knows a war of words with the “Sports Pope” would be pointless, so he directed the team to shut the gasbags up by going out and playing winning football.
