Cesar Ruiz, considered top interior lineman in 2020 NFL Draft, will virtually meet with Giants and Jets: report

Taking a look at this year’s NFL Draft class, the top tackle prospects have dominated most of the headlines, but there are some very strong interior linemen set to join the NFL ranks later this month as well, and Michigan center Cesar Ruiz may just top the list.

According to a report from Jordan Reid of The Draft Network, the former Wolverine has already met with 20 NFL teams and has virtual meetings set up with the Giants and Jets in the coming days.

SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano mocked Ruiz to the Giants in the second round of his Giants three-mock draft earlier this offseason and then mentioned him again as a possibility in his latest seven-round mock draft.

With the fourth overall pick in the draft, it’s likely the Giants will have their choice of whomever they consider the top tackle – whether that be Mekhi Becton, Andrew Thomas, Tristan Wirfs or Jedrick Wills — or possibly Clemson linebacker/safety hybrid Isaiah Simmons.

But if the Giants choose to address the tackle position in the first round, they could choose to upgrade the middle of their line with the 36th overall pick.

Ruiz, a Camden, N.J. native listed at 6-foot-3, 307 pounds, ran an impressive 5.08 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, while benching 28 reps on the bench press. He also has the versatility to slide from center to guard, as he did while at Michigan.

For now, the Giants have Spencer Pulley as their starting center, though they may be hoping that Jon Halapio is fully recovered from his Achilles injury to have him start their instead.

If Ruiz was to end up with Big Blue, there’s probably a better than decent chance that he would win the starting center job before Week 1.
