The Kansas City Chiefs, fresh off their overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, have hired former New York Giants interim head coach Steve Spagnuolo as their new defensive coordinator.

Spagnuolo was hired to replace veteran Bob Sutton, who was fired on Monday.

“Spags” was the Giants’ defensive coordinator from 2007-2008 before being hired as the head coach of the St. Louis Rams, where he coached for three miserable seasons. He then worked as an assistant for the New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens before returning to the Giants as their defensive coordinator in 2015.

He stayed on in the same capacity under Ben McAdoo after Tom Coughlin’s departure and was named interim head coach in 2017 after McAdoo was dismissed.

Spagnuolo was given the Chiefs’ job over former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and others, which his prior relationship with Reid likely playing a large role in the decision.
