Eli Manning gets richer, and Giants’ QB plan gets clearer

What had qualified as ordinary in the past today is significant.

It’s the fifth day of the league season, and Eli Manning is still on the Giants roster.

That means the 38-year-old just got $5 million richer, as part of a roster bonus guaranteed on this day. If the Giants wanted to move on from their quarterback, who’s entering his 16th season, they likely would have cut ties with him prior to 4 p.m. Saturday, when the roster-bonus deadline hit. Though it is not surprising, it is the surest sign yet that Manning will be a Giant in 2019.

Whom he will be throwing to — and who will be backing him up — is more up for debate. The Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns last week, a stunning move that would signal a rebuild, yet GM Dave Gettleman has said, “You can win while you build a roster.”

The Giants will be building behind Manning and have alluded to the Chiefs’ quarterback handoff, in which Patrick Mahomes sat for a year behind Alex Smith before taking the reins. The Giants have the No. 6-overall pick, and former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins may be available.
