ESPN names Saquon Barkley the Breakthrough Athlete Of The Year

Saquon Barkley gets another addition to his trophy case

New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley has been awarded another honor. He was chosen as the Best Breakthrough Athlete at ESPN’s annual ESPY’s award celebration.

Earlier this year, Barkley was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of The Year at this year’s NFL Honors award ceremony. And as he did with the Rookie Of The Year award at the NFL Honors ceremony, former Giant Odell Beckham Jr. presented Barkley with the Breakthrough Athlete award at the ESPYs.

ESPN has created the Breakthrough Athlete award in 1993 with the first ESPYs ceremony. It is normally presented to athletes following their rookie season and is awarded to the athlete that is judged to have made the greatest breakthrough performance a major international individual or North American professional team sport.

Barkley finds himself in good company, with athletes like Garry Sheffield (the first winner), Tiger Woods, Alfonso Soriano, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul and Mo’Ne Davis — as well as fellow NFL players Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Randy Moss, and Adrian Peterson, among others — all winning the award over the years.

Congratulations to Barkley and hopefully this is one of the first in a long line of awards and honors to come his way over the coming years.
