Former Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul’s season in jeopardy after car accident

After being involved in a single-car accident last week, the prognosis could be better for Jason Pierre-Paul

The Buccaneers DE suffered a fractured neck that could cause him to miss the entire 2019 season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported

Per Schefter, Pierre-Paul will visit with neck specialists this week in an effort to save his season, but the expectation is that he will undergo surgery to repair the injury.

Pierre-Paul was behind the wheel Thursday, when the accident occurred around 5 a.m. He and a passenger were admitted to and released from a local hospital the same day.

“We have been informed that Jason was involved in a one-car accident early this morning in South Florida in which he was not cited,” Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said in a statement last week after news of the accident emerged. “We know that he was evaluated at a local hospital and has since been released. Our immediate concern is for the safety and well-being of Jason and his passenger. We have been in contact with Jason and will be getting him further evaluated by our medical staff in the near future.”

This is not the first time an incident away from the field has resulted in an injury for the Super Bowl champion. On July 4, 2015, a fireworks mishap led to the amputation of his right index finger.

Pierre-Paul was traded to Tampa Bay in 2018 after spending the first eight seasons of his career in New York. His first season with the Buccaneers was largely successful — he started all 16 games, recorded 12.5 sacks and forced one fumble.
