Former Pro Bowl DL Richard Seymour helping out Giants’ Leonard Williams this offseason

Giants defensive lineman Leonard Williams made only 20 tackles with the team in seven games after being acquired from the Jets in a trade on Oct. 28.

The Jets drafted him sixth overall in the 2015 NFL draft out of USC, but he’s struggled in recent years after being named to the Pro Bowl in 2016. The 25-year-old is set to be a free agent, as the Giants have until March 18 to sign Williams to a contract extension.

Looking to get back to his Pro Bowl form, Williams recently sought out the help of former New England Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour.

Seymour, who’s nicknamed the “Godfather” because of his history of helping younger teammates, recently received a phone call from Williams.

“Can we meet up?” was the question, Seymour told ESPN’s Mike Reiss.

Seymour then invited Williams to his home in Atlanta last week, as the two watched game film and worked out together.

“I’ve worked with guys in the past — not so much on-the-field work, but just mentality, mindset,” Seymour said in a phone interview to Reiss. “Here’s the thing: In my mind, anybody can be good if they have a certain amount of talent. But what I try to give guys is the mindset of what it takes to be great, and to be great consistently. To develop a mentality over the course of your career. I’d say Leonard has all the tools for what it takes to be great.”

Seymour worked with Williams on specific defensive line drills, and believes he has the ability to be an All-Pro player.

“I’ve been working with him, assessing what I think his strengths and weaknesses are, and what does he need to do to take that next step to be the perennial All-Pro player that he has the ability to be. He’s 25 years old. He’s young. Athletic. Can run like a deer,” Seymour said.

Williams and Seymour connected on feeling the pressure of high expectations.

“I respect the hard work of guys that come in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh round, but it’s different when you are the guy and have to perform at that level, basically with a target on your back the whole time and live up to that. And exceed expectations,” Seymour said.

Williams even thanked Seymour for helping him out on Twitter, posting pictures of the pair watching film.
