Giants’ Antoine Bethea views Jabrill Peppers as his perfect complement in Giants’ defense

The back end of the Giants’ defense is going to have a very different look this season, and veteran safety Antoine Bethea believes that he and Jabrill Peppers can play off of each other very well for Big Blue.

Bethea, signed by the Giants in March, believes his style of play matches up very well with Peppers, one of the key pieces of the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

“Peppers, he likes to play down in the box, get his hands on guys, he can cover,” Bethea said. “I can play on the back end, and do a multitude of things. I think we can play off of each other very well.”

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Bethea has tallied 24 interceptions during his 13-year career. During his time with the Colts, 49ers, and Cardinals, Bethea has played in a variety of different defenses and has been asked to play different roles, and he sees Peppers’ past experience in Cleveland as being along the same path.

“It helps a lot, even going in week-to-week playing against your opponent,” Bethea said. “A lot of times, you’ll have a down safety and a back safety, but being that we’ve both played down and we’ve both played back, we can disguise our defense, help our defense, and confuse the opposing quarterback.”

Of course, it’s still very early on for Bethea and the rest of the Giants, but he believes that things are coming together nicely, particularly in the new-look back end of the secondary.

“So far so good,” Bethea said. “Just playing with one another — seeing how [Peppers] sees things, and seeing how he plays. I think it’s going to be a good connection between the two of us.”
