The Giants have cut G Patrick Omameh before he could finish his first season with the team, head coach Pat Shurmur said on Saturday.
GM Dave Gettleman was looking to solve the Giants’ offensive line woes this past offseason, which led to Omameh signing a three-year, $15 million deal to be the team’s new right guard. However, that quickly proved to be the wrong move, as the Giants having to bench him after Week 6.
After claiming former Rams G Jamon Brown off waivers during the bye week, he could be seeing a start in his first game suiting up for Big Blue. Releasing Omameh before Week 10 also helps the Giants in terms of comp picks in next year’s NFL Draft.
Omameh joins RB Jonathan Stewart as another bad offseason signing. Stewart, who was a $3.925 million cap hit this season, is out for the year with a foot injury.
With Omameh leaving the Giants an extra roster spot, WR Quadree Henderson will be activated from the practice squad to fill the void.
