Giants GM Dave Gettleman explains why Eli Manning being finished is a ‘false narrative’

Giants general manager Dave Gettleman continues to hit back at critics who say the team should move on from Eli Manning.

Speaking on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football on Wednesday, Gettleman once again came to Manning’s defense and insists he can still get the job done at 38 years old.

“At the end of the day, you can’t win without a quarterback. We all know it. It’s just the way the game is built. You have to have a quarterback,” Gettleman said. “I really believe there’s been a false narrative out there that Eli’s finished, he’s done. He had a heck of a year. We scored a lot of points late.

“At the end of the day, Eli can still make all the NFL throws. He can still play. Last time I checked, if your quarterback’s upright, it gives you a chance. So we rebuilt … the o-line, got another important piece with the Kevin Zeitler trade. Eli still is a quality NFL quarterback. It wears me out, it really does.

“Obviously he’s 38 years old. Like Pat (Shurmur) says, he’s closer to 40 than he is to 20. … The bottom line is, yes, we have to address it. It’s reality, so when the time’s right we will.”

Gettleman made similar comments to reporters on a conference call early last week after the Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

“This narrative that Eli’s overpaid and can’t play is a crock,” Gettleman said then, adding “there really wasn’t a decision to make” regarding Manning and his $23.2 million cap hit for the 2019 season.

The GM also tried to defend all of his recent transactions in the interview on Good Morning Football.

“We’ve had a really good offseason,” Gettleman said. “It wasn’t a secret: Three of our last four games, we couldn’t make a stop on defense in the fourth quarter. We could’ve won all three of those games. We’ve really bolstered the back end with the trade for Jabrill (Peppers) and also signing Antoine Bethea. We’ve, like I said, strengthened the o-line with the Kevin Zeitler trade. We’re building, and you can win and build at the same time. They’re not two separate pieces. You can do that, and we’re gonna do that. We’re gonna fix this and we’re gonna be better.”
