Giants GM Dave Gettleman sounds like he wants to draft a QB

While Giants GM Dave Gettleman will not divulge much on what his plan is, he sounds as if he is ready to take a quarterback in the draft this April.

After addressing reporters via conference call earlier in the day, Gettleman went on WFAN with Mike Francesa where he was asked about whether or not he still wants to find the future quarterback of the franchise.

“Obviously we have to address it,” Gettleman said. “I’d be a real clown not to admit it.”

The Giants hold the No. 6 and No. 17 picks in the first round of the draft but will enter the 2019 season with a 38-year-old Eli Manning

Manning is under contract for just this season, though, but the Giants also have several holes to fill on their defense and this year’s draft is rich with talented defensive players.

Yet, in a perfect world, Gettleman sounds as if he would take the quarterback and use the “Kansas City model” he alluded to at the scouting combine.

“Bring in a young kid and let him learn from the old pro. That’s how we’d like to approach it,” Gettleman told Francesa.

Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock are the three quarterbacks who could potentially be taken in the first round but Gettleman again cautioned about reaching for a quarterback.

“We got to believe that guy is legitimately qualified to be the starting quarterback of the New York Football Giants,” he said.

“The worst thing you can do is force something. Force a decision you’re going to regret,” Gettleman added. “Do I feel forced? No. Would I like to? … I’d like to do something but I have to believe it’s the right guy for this iconic franchise.”
