Prior to the NFL Competition Committee gathering in Indianapolis, Indiana ahead of the 2019 NFL Combine, reports surfaced that suggested expanding replay to cover non-calls was lacking support and was unlikely to pass this offseason.

Following those meetings, New York Giants co-owner John Mara all but confirmed that report, telling ESPN that an overhaul to the replay system is lacking support and that dealing with human error is just a reality if the game.

“Calls are just missed,” Mara said. “Officials are just human. They’re going to miss calls from time to time. … To think that we’re going to be a system where calls are always going to be corrected from New York or from upstairs, I just don’t think we’re there or even close to being there.”

Green Bay Packers president Mark Murphy shared similar sentiments.

“I think there is still a concern about reviewing judgment calls,” Murphy said. “We’ll study, but I don’t think anything is imminent that something will change. … Unfortunately, the reality is that officials are human. They make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. Players make mistakes.”

The stance on human error may not be enough to satisfy many, however.

The NFL had a very real problem with its officials in 2018, suspending two in-season for the first time in league history, and that came before a pivotal call in the NFC Championship Game between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams was missed despite how blatant it was for anyone watching.

Still, Mara feels allowing for non-calls to be reviewed opens a Pandora’s Box of sorts.

“Are you going to look for one area or check the entire offensive line?” Mara said. “I think you get into a lot of areas with a lot of unintended consequences, and I just don’t think there is a lot of sentiment for going in that direction at this point.”

The Competition Committee can still change its mind once the new league year begins, but at least for now, an overhaul to the replay system, including the ability to challenge non-calls, appears to be little more than a distant flicker of light far off in another universe.
