Some GMs believe Daniel Jones will emerge as top guy, per Walter Football
Good morning, New York Giants fans!
Right now, Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State is the clear QB1 in the 2019 NFL Draft. Walter Football writes that there are some GMs in the league who don’t believe it will stay that way.
The New York Jets have the third pick in the draft. Quarterback-needy teams will likely be looking to jump the Giants to get their guy. Put two and two together, and the Jets are in position to deny the Giants a chance to get the quarterback they want — if the Giants’ desire is to draft a quarterback.
Denver has the 10th pick in the draft. GM John Elway is reportedly “smitten” with Drew Lock. That might be a good thing for the Giants, since to date we haven’t really heard the Giants connected to Lock in any significant way.
A forward-thinking franchise should see a tremendous opportunity in Brissett. The organization can invest in a young quarterback at a reduced price and pay him on the rookie wage scale for a season, with the opportunity to open long-term negotiations if he proves to be the answer. No other option offers the same number of positives.
Valentine’s View: There are some who believe Brissett would be a fit for the Giants. The problem is the potential cost. Can the Giants afford to surrender the draft picks it would require for a guy who might end up being no more than a good backup?
Of course they are. They have no choice but to do something. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated and I discussed that on the latest edition of the ‘Valentine’s Views’ podcast.
Futures contract with Giants? Nah. Former Giants practice squad safety A.J. Howard got a better offer, and might end up with a Super Bowl ring.
