Giants news, 3/14: Why did the Odell Beckham trade happen? Jay Glazer, others explain

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

It’s still all Odell all the time

Odell Beckham Jr. is now a member of the Cleveland Browns, but explanations for and reactions to the Giants decision to make that franchise-changing decision are continuing to pour in.

Yours truly was on SB Nation Radio with Jake Asman on Wednesday night to discuss the deal. Please give the spot a listen. Now, let’s get to some of the other Beckham-related writing.

Why did the Giants do this?

Jay Glazer was really the first one to foreshadow the Giants’ decision, predicting a few weeks ago that Beckham would be moved this offseason. Wednesday, he was on Sirius XM NFL Radio with hosts Alex Marvez and Charles Davis talking about the deal.

“Sometimes it’s just time for a change of scenery for two parties. Kinda like a relationship. We’re friends, we love each other, but it’s time to move on. The passion’s gone. I think that’s what happened here with Odell and the Giants.”

Glazer said the Giants may have moved on earlier if not for coach Pat Shurmur, who wanted to make it work, and co-owner Steve Tisch, who “loves him.”

“Last few weeks when he want there there was a little change. I think that’s when they realized, you know what, we’re OK trading him,” Glazer said.

“After the end of this season when Odell wasn’t there the last few games and they started playing well they got the blessing of both owners.”

Written accounts from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and Ralph Vacchiano of SNY verify and expand on what Glazer said.

Breer wrote that Beckham’s quad injury, when he “he essentially shut it down for the year, when some thought he could push through” was part of the decision. So, too, was the final realization by Giants’ brass “that a major rebuild was in order.”

The money quote in Vacchiano’s piece is this:

“He had become too much of a pain in the a—,” said one source familiar with the situation. “And there was a real fear that eventually it would get worse.”

How Justin Tuck thinks Giants fans should view Odell Beckham trade

Leave it to the former Giants defensive captain to be the voice of reason trying to soothe the fan base.

“Give it time,” is Tuck’s message to Giants fans. “I’ll get mad at his decision if in two years we’re still where we are. Why jump on it right now?”

In the meantime, he will trust general manager Dave Gettleman.

“I think Gettleman is doing what he thinks is best for the franchise for the long term, and I don’t think anybody can question that,” Tuck told The Post. “Everyone gets so emotional about these things, but I think all the players understand this is a business, and we need to approach it as a business, and things like this happen unfortunately.

“Long story short, I think Odell needed a new change of scenery as well as this team needed to move on and try to get what they got for him.
