New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur took the podium at the 2019 NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday morning and wasted absolutely no time in addressing the future of quarterback Eli Manning.
“I think Eli can help us win games. He proved — when the players started playing better — that he can play at a very high level,” Shurmur said. “I want Eli back. He’s back. Let’s get ready to go.”
And just like that, an entire year worth of faulty football narrative was shattered.
The Giants were never in a position to walk away from Eli Manning contrary to the outside belief, and Shurmur clearly wanted to put a cap on the rumors and speculation immediately.
Pressed on the team’s decision to stick with Manning, Shurmur, who has developed a reputation as a quarterback expert, doubled down.
“I fully expect him ,” Shurmur added. “I’m a body collector. I want to keep all the players we have and add new ones. And I really feel that way about Eli.”
The return of Manning does not preclude the Giants from taking a quarterback in the 2019 NFL Draft however, and Shurmur was adamant they could very well go that route in April. But regardless of what decision is ultimately made when New York is put on the clock, Manning will remain their starting quarterback for the upcoming season.
