Giants-Redskins halftime score: Giants lead 34-0

Your second-half open thread

The Giants lead the Washington Redskins 34-0 after the first half of football.

The second game between Washington and the Giants got off about as expected given the injuries suffered by both offenses.

New York won the opening coin toss and elected to defer, giving the ball to Washington to start the afternoon. The Giants’ defense quickly capitalized on offensive miscues to end Washington’s first drive, getting the ball to the Giants’ offense. Unfortunately, Washington did the same, and the first quarter was largely defined by sloppy offensive play.

The Giants drew first blood when Kareem Martin tipped a Mark Sanchez pass and turning into an arm-punt, with Curtis Riley fielding the easy interception and returning it for a touchdown.

The Giants’ offense finally found some traction in the second quarter, and Eli Manning got the yards he needed to be the seventh player in NFL history to throw for 55,000 yards. That drive ended in an Aldrick Rosas field goal after the 43rd sack of Manning knocked the team well away from the goal line.

The Giants next drive lasted all of one play when Sterling Shepard made a key block at the line of scrimmage to spring Saquon Barkley for a breakaway 78-yard touchdown run. That run put Barkley over 1,000 yards on the season, the Giants’ first 1,000-yard rusher since Ahmad Bradshaw.

Barkley’s touchdown run stretched the Giants’ lead to 17 – 0, which was quickly extended to 24-0 following a Sterling Shepard touchdown reception off of Alec Ogletree’s fifth interception and fourth in four weeks.

Washington tight end Jordan Reed left the field in the first quarter with a foot injury. He had to be helped back to the locker room and was officially “questionable” to return

After deferring to open the game, the Giants will get the ball to start the second half, we’ll see if rookie QB Kyle Lauletta gets his first look in this blow-out.
