Giants’ Saquon Barkley, Browns’ Baker Mayfield have friendly wager on Rookie of the Year award

The NFL will reveal the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year on Saturday, and the two candidates have decided to make things interesting.

Giants running back Saquon Barkley and Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield have a friendly wager on the award.

Barkley told Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the loser must buy the winner a chain.

“We get to pick the chain, and we get to have fun with itbecause obviously everyone’s talking about who’s going to win,” Barkley said. “And at the end of the day, we’d love to see each otehr win, but we’d also love to see ourselves win too, but we made a little bet with it just to show how friendly we are, that it’s bigger than just the award.”

Mayfield and Barkley went first and second overall in the NFL draft, respectively, and are good friends.

“We’re actually doing a trip with each other coming up soon,” Barkley said.

Mayfield has already been awarded the PFWA Rookie of the Year, while Barkley was the PFWA Offensive Rookie of the Year and also named the Pepsi Rookie of the Year — which is voted on by fans.

Barkley had a historic season, setting franchise and league rookie records, while Mayfield also put up record numbers — throwing the most touchdown passes for a rookie quarterback (27) — and also restored faith in the Browns franchise, going 6-7 as the starter.

Yet, even if Barkley wins, he may not get off that easy.

Mayfield told Cabot earlier in the week that the Giants running back hates the nickname “Sa-Quads” and if Barkley beats him for the award, he plans on calling him “Quads” for revenge.
