Giants’ Saquon Barkley: Film session with Eli Manning was eye-opening

Saquon Barkley has never been reluctant to praise Eli Manning as a quarterback, but the Giants running back said the QB isn’t a bad teacher, either.

The 21-year-old Barkley described a recent encounter between the two teammates, telling the New York Post that after sitting in the dark for an hour while studying film, the QB came in to join him. After twenty minutes, Professor Manning took over.

“He showed me three things that I didn’t even see,” Barkley said (NY Post). “That just showed me how far I am from being where I want to be.”

Barkley helped improve the Giants’ record to 3-7 with a show-stopping performance against the Buccaneers. He attacked Tampa with a season-high 142 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving), earning the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award.

Manning also had a stellar Sunday, completing 17 of his 18 pass attempts with two touchdowns.

He said Barkley is a good student.

“I think he’s improved every week, and I think he’s a guy who wants to be great, wants to get better,” Manning said, per the Post. “There’s something he thinks he can improve on, whether it’s just in a route or in protection or the way he’s running, he takes the coaching well, and I thought he just ran with a little more sense of urgency and just hitting the holes hard and you can see it and it paid off. He had his best game.”

Barkley said Manning will always be a model to him, no matter how long he remains the Giants’ quarterback.

“The way he handles himself is amazing,” Barkley said, per the Post. “As a young guy, he’s definitely someone to look up to.”

With the Cowboys and Redskins now tied for the NFC East lead at 5-5, the Giants can inch closer to the top of the division with a win over the Eagles on Sunday.

Big Blue would get a big boost with a similar performance from their two study buddies.
