Giants’ Saquon Barkley thinks he ‘can be the best running back to ever play the game’

Giants running back Saquon Barkley is setting the bar as high as possible.

In an interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks, Barkley was informed that his rookie-year teammate Jonathan Stewart said Barkley can be the best running back of all-time.

Asked if he was right, Barkley said, “Yes. I believe so. I believe that I can be the best running back to ever play the game.”

Barkley is coming off winning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after rushing 261 times for 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns, and catching 91 passes for 721 yards and four scores. His 2,028 yards from scrimmage led the NFL in 2018.

His bold comment came from the same interview in which he defended Eli Manning, saying the Giants’ struggles from last season weren’t his fault.

Barkley went No. 2 overall in last year’s draft behind Baker Mayfield. Asked how the two are similar, Barkley said “work ethic” before providing a scenario which would have NFL fans everywhere excited.

“I would say that if we’re both able to stay healthy and do what we can do that we might see each other in the Super Bowl one day,” Barkley said.

Such a Super Bowl would feature Odell Beckham Jr. playing for the Browns and not the Giants after last month’s blockbuster trade. Barkley said he’s hung out with Beckham since the trade and that Beckham was wearing a Browns shirt after working out.

“It’s sad to see him go,” Barkley said. “Obviously that’s my boy. I’m upset. I don’t think anybody’s gonna sit out here and say, ‘I’m happy Odell got traded.'”
