In mid-December, ESPN’s Todd McShay released his first 2019 NFL Mock Draft and had the New York Giants selecting Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the No. 6 overall pick. At the time, Haskins had not yet declared.
Nearly two months later, McShay has now released his mock draft 2.0 and once again, Big Blue goes with Haskins in Round 1.
6. New York Giants
Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State*
Imagine this big-armed signal-caller uncorking shots to Odell Beckham Jr. or finding Saquon Barkley in the flat. Sound fun? The one-year Buckeyes starter shows good touch and anticipation, and could be Big Blue’s quarterback of the future. It makes perfect sense here, as long as another quarterback-hungry team doesn’t hop the Giants via a trade.
Haskins has been the most popular mock to the Giants in recent months, with most projecting him to New York at No. 6 overall. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray and Alabama offensive tackle Jonah Williams are the other frequent projections.
Since declaring for the NFL Draft, Haskins has made his desires abundantly clear: he grew up a Giants fan and would be more than willing to sit behind Eli Manning and learn for a year or two.
Will that ultimately be the direction the Giants go? That remains to be seen, but there is growing concern that there are some weaknesses in Haskins’ game and with only a year of starting under his belt, he may be a bit larger of a gamble than the Giants are willing to take.
