How Giants’ Jabrill Peppers is handling pressure after being traded for Odell Beckham Jr.

One of the key players to watch this season for the Giants will be new safety Jabrill Peppers

Peppers, a former first-round pick, joins the Giants from the Cleveland Browns as part of Big Blue’s return in the shocking Odell Beckham Jr. trade.

The third-year safety’s numbers were pedestrian with the Browns, recording an interception in each of his first two seasons, but GM Dave Gettleman regards Peppers as a first-round talent.

That standard, along with whom he was traded for, puts plenty of attention on Peppers as he joins a new team, but Peppers said that pressure to perform is always there, regardless of the circumstances.

“Even before the trade, I was saying that I have to pick up the play, it’s year three,” Peppers said Tuesday at Giants minicamp. “You definitely gotta pick up the play to be at the level I know I need to play at, and this organization needs me to play at. Regardless how I got here, I’m here, and I’m ready to play my best ball, work as hard as I can and help this organization win ball games on Sundays.”

Last month, the 24-year-old appeared to tweet some frustration that he was only on the field for 64 percent of the Browns’ defensive snaps last season, a stat he is hoping to change with the Giants.

“In the grand scheme of things, I didn’t really realize it,” he said. “Looking back on it, more plays means more opportunities to make plays. Everything happens for a reason, I still think I did pretty well. I can definitely take it up a notch.”

Peppers certainly appears motivated. He has been spending time around veteran safety Antoine Bethea and is bringing plenty of energy to the field, trash-talking the offense despite being the new guy.

“I know how defenses play the game,” he said. “So if they are used to it in practice, they will be used to it in the game, and tos ee how they respond. Competition brings the best out in everybody. It never hurts a little bit.”
