How the 49ers’ win over the Raiders impacts the Giants in the NFL Draft

After the 49ers beat the Raiders on Thursday night, the Giants are now in line for the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

At 1-7, the Giants are tied with the Raiders for the worst record in the NFL, however because they have a greater strength of schedule through eight games with Oakland, they don’t hold the tiebreaker for the No. 1 pick.

Entering Thursday, the 49ers were 1-7 and the Raiders were 1-6, but Nick Mullens, who entered the 2018 season as San Francisco’s third-string quarterback, led the 49ers by throwing for 262 yards and three touchdowns in his NFL debut.

Though the Raiders, led by coach Jon Gruden, have lost four straight games and have a minus-111 point differential, which ranks 31st in the league, it is the Giants, whose minus-55 point differential ranks 29th in the league, who have the longest active losing streak in the league at five straight losses.

Since beating the Texans in Week 3, they have lost to the Saints (33-18), Panthers (33-31), Eagles (34-13), Falcons (23-20) and Redskins (20-13). They are currently on a bye week and next face the 49ers on the road on Monday, Nov. 12, in a game that could have meaningful implications for next year’s draft order.

The Giants haven’t had back-to-back picks in the top 10 since they picked Cedric Jones fifth in 1996 and Ike Hilliard seventh in 1997. They have never had back-to-back drafts with top-five picks. But after drafting Saquon Barkley second overall this past April, this could be another first.
