Instant analysis: Giants get their EDGE rusher in Oshane Ximines

The Giants waited a long time Friday to finally select Oshane Ximines out of Old Dominion

After an interminable wait while the rest of the NFL maneuvered around the draft board and picked players, the 95th overall pick finally arrived, and with it came the New York Giants’ lone selection on Friday night in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The Giants used the pick acquired in the trade of Odell Beckham Jr. to select EDGE Oshane Ximines out of Old Dominion.

Ximines has solid size for an EDGE at 6-foot-3 12 and 253 pounds and is a solid, if unspectacular, athlete.

He was productive at Old Dominion, racking up 176 tackles (51 for a loss), 32.5 sacks, 12 passes defensed, and 11 forced fumbles over four years (49 games) in college.

Ximines has a reputation as a high-motor technician as a pass rusher, relying more on his hand usage and pass rush moves to beat blockers than his athleticism. Ximines’ first step isn’t great, but he can be quick once he gets moving. He is also an edge player who can set an edge in the run game.

The Giants desperately needed an infusion of talent at the EDGE position even before trading away Olivier Vernon and Ximines is a start at filling that hole. Ximines isn’t as exciting a pick as one of the elite top-end EDGE rushers would have been in the first round, but he presents a solid value on the Big Blue View big board, graded as a second-round talent.

There is still talent on the board, such as Alabama’s Christian Miller or Oregon’s Justin Hollins, for the Giants to double-down on the position should they so choose.
