Jacksonville reportedly making a run at Nick Foles, what does it mean for the Giants?

How would the Jaguars signing Nick Foles impact the Giants’ plans at quarterback?

The landscape of the 2019 quarterback position might be changing as soon as the NFL’s “Legal Tampering” window opens on Monday, March 11th.

A report out of the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine from Philly.com states that the Jacksonville Jaguars are working on a contract structure to sign impending free agent quarterback Nick Foles. The report states that the Jaguars believe they are only a quarterback away from competing for a Super Bowl, and believe that Foles is that missing piece.

If this report is accurate and Foles winds up signing with Jacksonville, it could change the calculus of the New York Giants search for a quarterback to be the heir for Eli Manning. The Giants are also rumored to be a potential landing spot for Foles, based on the familiarity between Foles and Pat Shurmur, who coached him in Philadelphia. But by the same token, Foles’ former quarterbacks coach, John DeFilippo is now the offensive coordinator in Jacksonville. If the Giants are looking to free agency to find a “bridge” quarterback to replace Manning, it sounds like Foles will soon be off the market.

However, if the Giants are looking to the draft to find a quarterback to develop behind Manning, the acquisition of Foles by the Jaguars would take a potential competitor for the limited pool of top quarterback prospects out of the running.

For now, these are only rumors, but they provide an interesting backdrop to the action on the field at the scouting combine, and will likely inform the Giants’ strategy in free agency.
