Jerry Jeudy to Giants in latest PFF mock draft

In Pro Football Focus‘ latest mock ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Giants are in prime position to address their offensive line.

The first three picks of the mock, held by the Bengals, Redskins and Lions, respectively, no players from the O-line are drafted. The Giants have the pick of the litter.

Instead, the Giants select the first wide receiver off the board in Alabama’s Jerry Jeudy

Here’s PFF’s explanation on the curious pick:

“Giants’ faithful is begging for the team to address the pressing need at offensive tackle at No. 4 overall in the 2020 NFL Draft, but Jeudy is a better prospect than every offensive tackle in this class. Rookies, especially rookie offensive linemen, don’t fill pressing needs. Over the past five NFL seasons, only nine rookie offensive tackles have played 400-plus snaps and earned overall grades above 70.0. None have earned an overall grade above 82.0. Don’t address pressing needs in the draft; just draft the best players available.”

While the Giants could stand to address some needs along the trenches, their offensive line play in 2019 wasn’t among the worst in the league, according to PFF. Perhaps this is what caused Jeudy to be the Giants’ pick, as the analytics outlet graded the Giants offensive line as the No. 17 line in their final rankings after last season. An upgrade would be welcomed, but Jeudy would be as well.

The Alabama playmaker is one of the top, if not the best wideout, along with Oklahoma’s CeeDee Lamb, heading into the draft. The 6-foot-1 target is praised as an excellent route runner, but sometimes has be knocked for dropping a ball here or there.

Despite that, the prime prospect would push the Giants’ play-making talent on offense amongst the best in the NFL, Jeudy would join an offense which includes Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, Evan Engram, Darius Slayton and Saquon Barkley. That’d certainly shine the spotlight a bit more on quarterback Daniel Jones in Year 2.
