Despite a long and ugly history of NFL Draft blunders, the New York Jets decided to have some fun with the Giants over their 2018 selection on Thursday night.
The Jets were able to grab their quarterback of the future in the 2018 draft in Sam Darnold at No. 3, which would not have been possible if the Giants hadn’t taken Saquon Barkley and opted for Darnold instead with the second overall pick.
So, on this draft day the Jets decided to offer their thanks to the Giants a year after Darnold basically fell into their lap at No. 3.
Of course, that No. 14 jersey is Darnold’s.
While the Jets have high hopes for Darnold being their franchise quarterback for years to come, the odds are certainly against them. That’s because Gang Green has swung and missed on just about every quarterback they have taken in the franchise’s history.
Should Darnold actually work out for the Jets, it will have been because the team was fortunate with the way things shook out, considering not many thought the USC product would fall that far.
Nobody should be feeling bad for the Giants, though. Big Blue got themselves a special talent and potential future hall of famer in Barkley.
The Penn State product cleaned up in the rookie award category, including earning the honor as the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after compiling over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 15 total touchdowns.
Not to mention, the Giants (5-11) still finished with a better record than the Jets (4-12).
Maybe the Jets should wait to see how things fully pan out before thanking the Giants. After all, a shaky draft history would prove that to be the smartest approach for the Jets.
