What was the reasoning behind the trade of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants to the Cleveland Browns? The Giants clearly wanted to cash him in for pieces they could build with. That’s one reason.

Many believe Beckham wanted out as well. That’s not true, says NFL Network reporter Kimberly Jones, who Beckham has a close relationship with:

“Odell Beckham, Jr. never wanted to leave New York or the New York Giants. I think there’s the idea out there that he either for this or the Giants believed that was his desire, so they accommodated him in some way,” Jones said on NFL Network.

“That is all false. He was happy as a Giant. He always talked to me first and foremost about winning. When we talked football, his desire to win with Eli Manning and to put another Lombardi in the case at the Giants.

“So, he was committed to that team and I believe he thought his future would be there until very recently when it occurred to him and his camp that a trade could happen as we know it ultimately did happen.”

Jones then redirected the attention to recent media criticism.

“Rhett, I want to go back to that tweet for just a moment,” Jones said, calling up a tweet.

“The idea that he’s having a little fun at his own expense — and at our expense to some degree — because here in New York he’s being absolutely savaged on sports talk radio, where people who’ve never met him and never had a conversation with him make conclusions about him that frankly are not true. And that’s where he’s playing off the idea that he”s not a cancer. And I can assure you, he’s not a cancer.

“I’ll leave you with this…

“Think of all of the Giants over the last four years who’ve left the team. It’s been a lot. They’ve had a ton of turnover, especially lately. Very, very rarely do you hear any of them say anything that is not a raving, positive assessment of who Beckham is. Not only as a player, but as a teammate.”

So, there you have it. The Giants wanted Beckham out and out he went. It wasn’t his idea after all.
