Kyle Lauletta active for Giants for first time this season

Giants head coac Pat Shurmur was incredulous last week when responding to a reporter’s question and asking why he would jump over Alex Tanney to get a look at Kyle Lauletta. That seems like hot air now, since Lauletta is active Sunday for the first time this season.

Lauletta will back up Eli Manning with Tanney inactive — the smart move for a Giants team that would have been doubling down on last year’s quarterback mistake if they had turned to Tanney over Lauletta

The expectation continues to be that Lauletta will get time at some point this season, likely after the team is officially eliminated from playoff contention, as SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano has reported.

With the Giants 3-8 and facing the Bears on Sunday, a loss will take their almost impossibly slim playoff chances down even further and potentially extinguish them entirely.

And with Lauletta active for the first time, it’s fair to wonder if he’ll get in the game if the Giants are down big.

If Lauletta doesn’t get in Sunday’s game and the Giants lose to fall to 3-9, it’s reasonable to think he’ll be considered for the start next Sunday against the Redskins.

The 23-year-old University of Richmond product, who had a run-in with police earlier this season due to a traffic violation, was taken by the Giants in the fourth round (108th overall) of the NFL Draft in April.
