Latest mock draft has Giants getting QB of future

With less than three months to go until the 2019 NFL Draft, Sports Illustrated’s Kalyn Kahler’s updated mock draft shows high hopes for the Giants’ next franchise quarterback.

It’s been over a month since SI’s last mock draft — before Dwayne Haskins led Ohio State to a Rose Bowl title with a 28-23 win over Washington. A week later, Haskins erased the questions marks by foregoing his final season of eligibility for the Buckeyes and declaring for the NFL draft.

Now, SI has the Giants selecting Haskins in the first round as their No. 6 overall pick on Thursday, April 25 at 8:00 p.m., the first day of the draft.

The redshirt sophomore finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy and threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first season as a starter. He won the Chicago Tribune Silver Football award as the best player in the Big Ten, and earned the Big Ten’s Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year and Griese-Brees Quarterback of the Year awards.

“Despite real concern over his limited experience as a starter, Haskins has all the physical gifts NFL teams look for in quarterbacks — height, arm strength and accuracy — and he has true franchise quarterback potential,” writes Kahler.

Haskins became New York’s obvious choice to become QB Eli Manning‘s successor when Oregon QB Justin Herbert decided to return to the University for his senior year.

But SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano argues the Jets, of all teams, could cost the Giants a shot at Haskins.

“The Jets could have several, lucrative offers to trade down from their spot at No. 3 to a team that wants to get up over the Giants for a quarterback,” Vacchiano said.

There’s still no guarantee the Giants even want Haskins. as one team source told Vacchiano that though they’re checking him out, it’s far too early to draw any conclusions.

Mock drafts are drawing their own conclusions on Haskins. For now, they draft the 21-year-old quarterback with the Giants.
