At least now we know specifically what Mike Francesa held against traded Giants star Odell Beckham Jr.
Francesa alleged in a video rant for Draft Kings this week that Beckham once blew off a team function he was paid to attend, and he even added that he heard the no-show was because the oft-critical WFAN host was the MC of the event.
“The Giants were sick of Beckham. That’s what happened. They’re sick of Beckham. That’s what it was,” Francesa said. “They finally got to the point — I was sick of him years ago — but they finally got to that point.
“Listen, I went after him hard. I had run-ins with him, where he didn’t show up at a Giants function where I was asked to MC it. There were 1,100 people there, including 700 kids, and he was paid $25,000 for the breakfast by the Giants. It was a Giant-run breakfast. Eleven Giants showed up. He didn’t. And that’s just typical of what he got away with year after year here.”
Francesa went on to say that he later heard that Beckham’s mother informed the Giants the star receiver “didn’t show up because they knew I was MC-ing it, which they didn’t.”
“So I went round and round with him, he and I had our moments,” Francesa continued. “No confrontations, we were never in the same place, but he refused to talk to me the last couple of years and I was very hard on him. I admit it.”
A source believed the event in question actually was Big Blue Travel’s annual postseason breakfast after the 2016 season, but said Beckham informed organizers a couple of days before the appearance that he was unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict. The Giants declined comment.
The $90 million receiver officially was traded Wednesday — along with Olivier Vernon — to Cleveland for safety Jabrill Peppers, guard Kevin Zeitler, a first-round pick (17th overall) and a third-round selection.
Francesa has been extremely critical of Beckham through the years for his antics on and off the field, and he’s publicly supported them cutting ties with the lightning-rod wideout.
“I was very hard on (former Giants tight end Jeremy) Shockey, and I was right about Shockey,” Francesa said. “And I’m gonna be right about Beckham.”
