It looks like there will be one more change this offseason on the New York Giants staff, but not because of a firing. Rather, the Giants will need a new defensive backs coach after their current one, Lou Anarumo, has received the defensive coordinator job with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals made the announcement on Thursday after the move was speculated upon during the past week.
Anarumo will be working under new Bengals head coach Zac Taylor, who previously served as the Rams quarterback coach and is replacing the long-tenured Marvin Lewis, who mutually parted ways with the team despite having one year left on his contract. After making Anarumo one of the first hires for his new staff, Taylor already had some good things to say about the coach.
“Tremendous energy. I always thought he got the best out of his players. His messaging and what he wanted to do on defense was always crystal clear to those guys. I just like the way he communicated with his coaches when he was the coordinator and with his players, through the years I was with him.”
The Giants are now left without a defensive backs coach, and will have to fill that role before the season starts. Henry Baker was hired from Rutgers as the assistant defensive backs coach already during this offseason, but because of a lack of high-level experience, it looks highly unlikely that Baker will replace Anarumo as the main coach for the position. Will the new coach be an improvement? We’ll just have to wait and see.
