Who are the New York Giants going to take at quarterback? The popular answer to that question would be Dwayne Haskins Jr. Another answer is Kyler Murray. Some have even said that Daniel Jones, from Duke, could be a decent option flying under the radar. One name that hasn’t come up in draft talks much at all, however, is that of Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham.
While Stidham has often been forgotten as a prospect, the New York Post has reported that Giants organization met with him at site of the Senior Bowl. Additionally, it wasn’t just ordinary scouts that met with Stidham, but head coach Pat Shurmur and GM Dave Gettleman. It seems unlikely that both Shurmur and Gettleman would take out the time to meet with Stidham if the Giants didn’t have at least some serious interest.
Supposedly, it was “a really good meeting”, which is something that could be relevant down the line when the Giants are narrowing down prospects. Interestingly enough, Stidham is friends with Jets quarterback Sam Darnold and has already heard about what it’s like to play in the area.
“It’s a little crazy up there, apparently he’s like a celebrity up there. He said he’s been loving it, loves playing in New York and just trying to win some more ballgames,” Stidham said about Darnold. When asked what he would think about playing in the same area, Stidham had a pretty interesting response. “That would be great. I wouldn’t mind that at all.”
Stidham began his career at Baylor but transferred to Auburn after one season, finishing his career there after spending one year in JUCO after leaving Baylor. He threw 36 touchdowns in his two years at Auburn, in addition to 5,952 yards in a tough SEC West division.
Other quarterbacks overshadow Stidham in the first round and so it looks like, if the Giants are interested, Stidham could be a value pick that they can get without using the sixth overall pick on a quarterback. At the very least, it’s worth considering in depth, although Stidham would be a project quarterback rather than an immediate successor to Eli Manning.
