Pat Shurmur: Eli Manning had ‘no response’ to Giants drafting Daniel Jones

Nothing ever seems to faze Eli Manning

Giants GM Dave Gettleman and head coach Pat Shurmur had called their 38-year-old starting quarterback to let him know they were about to draft his eventual successor, Daniel Jones, with the sixth overall pick in the draft.

On Saturday, Shurmur was asked about Manning’s response to that decision.

“No response,” Shurmur said. “I’ve never been around a person who can stay in the moment better than Eli Manning. … He’s training hard to have a terrific season.

“It’s the second year in our system and he knows what we’re doing better than some of the guys teaching him.”

While Manning is staying in the moment, so is his successor.

Jones had his first media session with reporters on Friday before his first rookie mini-camp practice but he did not pay any attention to what was said or written about him.

“I got up over here and opened up the second install,” he said. “That’s what I needed to do.”

Shurmur said that it is evident Jones is “well-coached” and is confident he can make the necessary adjustments from the college to pro playbook.

“He’s got very good fundamentals,” Shurmur said. “Some of the plays we’re going to ask him to execute has been different from what he’s done, those will be new drops, a little bit different footwork, but he’s pretty well-coached.”

Despite some drops by receivers in practice, Jones was pretty content with how his first day went.

“I think for the most part guys knew where to go, knew where to line up. I thought we did a good job preparing,” Jones said. “As a quarterback you want to have an idea of what everyone is doing and want to be able to help everyone. Overall I thought it was good and we have a new install [Saturday] so that will be another challenge.”
