Pat Shurmur gives Giants high marks for OTA attendance

There were a few excused absences. An occasional player not being present. But otherwise, the Giants had near-perfect attendance for their voluntary organized team activities this spring, a departure from recent years, when players such as Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon were no-shows.

“I do think it means something when the players get something out of being here. I do believe that when you train together, you learn something from the people that you are training with,” Giants coach Pat Shurmur said following Tuesday’s workout. “I also know that if you are going to build chemistry — we have a lot of new and a lot of young — so the more time they can spend together, the better.”

On some teams that have been together for a long time, building chemistry in the offseason isn’t quite as important. But the Giants, with so many newcomers, aren’t one of those teams.

“I am glad, it shows that they care and it shows that they think what we are doing is important,” Shurmur said. “I think the time they spend together is going to help in the long run.”

Shurmur has been impressed by rookie wide receiver Darius Slayton, the team’s fifth-round pick out of Auburn, who has gotten some first-team reps this spring.

“I think he is the most improved in my eyes,” the coach said. “We expected a lot out of him when he got here. The rookie minicamp was unremarkable, but since that time [he has performed well].”

After workouts the next two days, the non-rookies will go their separate ways, until returning for training camp, which starts on July 24. Rookies have another few days of workouts next week before their break begins.

Shurmur said the Giants won’t have any joint scrimmages this year during camp because they play the teams he was considering during the season.

Cornerback Sam Beal was back after missing two minicamp practices last week for personal reasons.
