PETA responds to Giants’ Odell Beckham Jr. having catch with chimpanzee

Odell Beckham Jr.‘s catch with a chimpanzee did not go over so well with PETA.

The Giants wide receiver posted on his Instagram story a video of himself tossing a football with a chimpanzee and trying to pry a football out of the mouth of a jungle cat on Saturday.

The video went viral but on Tuesday PETA Director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement Brittany Peet issued a statement condemning the video.

Peet gave Beckham the benefit of the doubt and mostly targeted Myrtle Beach Safari — the zoo that apparently supplied the animals.

“These sensitive and much-abused animals belong with their families in nature, not pimped out as props by shameless roadside zoos,” Peet said. “We’re sure that Odell Beckham Jr. had no idea that the sleazy safari park where this young chimpanzee is kept has a lengthy record of violating federal law and uses great apes and big-cat cubs in cheap publicity stunts like this.”

Myrtle Beach Safari was subjected to a federal investigation in 2016 for repeated noncompliance violations, including the treatment of tigers that were diagnosed with ringworm, and have previously had complaints filed against them by PETA and the Humane Society.

Peet continued: “These encounters are incredibly dangerous, and PETA urges everyone – including Beckham, who certainly doesn’t want another injury – to steer clear of cruel facilities that exploit animals.

PETA’s motto reads, in part, that ‘animals are not ours to use for entertainment.'”
