Quarterback “probably” in Giants’ Round 1 plan — Gettleman

Drew Lock

GM tells Mike Francesa he doesn’t feel forced to draft a QB now

Recent indications have been that the New York Giants would not use the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft on a quarterback. Monday morning, Gettleman called the negativity surrounding quarterback Eli Manninga crock.”

Monday afternoon, though, Gettleman told Mike Francesa of WFAN [via NJ.com] that the team “probably” would select it’s quarterback of the future in the upcoming draft “if all goes according to plan.”

Does that mean quarterback IS in play at No. 6? Maybe. More likely, though, would be the 17th pick in the draft. Remember, thanks to the Odell Beckham trade, the Giants have two first-round picks, the second 17th overall. They have 12 picks, including at least one in every round.

If the Giants elect not to use the sixth pick on a quarterback, that means they are in position to use the 17th pick on a quarterback, or use that 17th pick and other draft resources to move up and get their guy.

If reports are accurate that Haskins is not their guy, that perhaps puts Drew Lock of Missouri and Daniel Jones of Duke in play.

Gettleman, who would likely be a really awful poker player, said at the Combine that he dreams of drafting a franchise quarterback for the Giants.

“I would love to drop a franchise quarterback in this place, then watch him from Cape Cod and enjoy the hell out of him,” he said.

“That’s a gift and it’s what I would like to do for the New York Giants.”

Gettleman has said lately that the “Kansas City model,” drafting a QB and letting him sit behind a veteran for a season like the Kansas City Chiefs did with Patrick Mahomes, is one he would like to emulate.

“Do I feel forced to do something now? No. Would I like to? Probably,” Gettleman said. “But I have to believe it’s the right guy to be the QB for this iconic franchise.”
