Redskins QB Alex Smith suffered a gruesome season-ending injury during the second half on Sunday, breaking his tibia and fibula during Washington’s loss to the Texans.
Smith will need immediate surgery for the injury, head coach Jay Gruden said after the game.
The 34-year-old Smith was replaced by Colt McCoy, who was unable to complete a comeback in the final seconds as the Skins fell to 6-4.
Smith’s injury could have ramifications in the NFC East, where the Cowboys (5-5) trail the Redskins by just one game.
The Eagles (4-5) are in action Sunday against the 8-1 Saints, while the Giants (3-7) need a miracle to get back in the division race.
