Giants swap one big contract for another

Multiple reports are indicating Friday that the New York Giants are trading defensive end Olivier Vernon to the Cleveland Browns. The return is reportedly offensive guard Kevin Zeitler.

Just Thursday, there had been reports that the Giants were “leaning towards keeping” Vernon. There had also been national reports that the Browns were looking to move Zeitler, who turned 30 today.

The trade, basically, amounts to a swap of salaries.

Vernon was entering the fourth year of a five-year, $85 million contract. He carries a cap hit of $19.5 million in 2019.

Zeitler is in the third year of a five-year, $60 million contract he signed with the Browns. He carries a $12.4 million cap hit in 2019.

Zeitler is a seven-year veteran who has started 103 of the 104 NFL games he has played in, all at right guard. His acquisition leaves the status of free agent guard Jamon Brown, who played eight games for the Giants after being claimed on waivers last season, unclear.
