Seahawks QB Russell Wilson rumored to want trade to Giants

The Giants are in the midst of the search for Eli Manning’s potential successor this offseason, and they may have to add another player to the list. And, no, it isn’t a new top prospect from the Draft or a free agent.

How about Seahawks QB Russell Wilson

It seems crazy to think, but FS1’s Colin Cowherd is hearing some rumors that Wilson wants out of Seattle, and the Giants would be a perfect destination for him.

Breaking this down makes sense: First, Wilson is in the final year of his contract where he will make $17 million in 2019. The Seahawks have the option to franchise tag him next year if they don’t want to extend a long-term deal, but that is looking to be about $31 million. If Seattle doesn’t want to take on that burden, they could explore trading away Wilson to a quarterback-needy team to get some value out of both sides parting ways.

Cowherd also brings to light what Wilson’s wife, recording artist Ciara, may want.

“Russell Wilson’s wife is Ciara. She is a singer and an entertainer. She would prefer to live in New York,” Cowherd says. “…Seattle is not an entertainment mecca.”

Finally, there is also the fact that Wilson already led the Seahawks to a Super Bowl title back in 2013. And after losing to the Patriots the following year on the infamous Malcom Butler interception at the goaline in Super Bowl XLIX, the Seahawks have not made it past the Divisonal Round since then.

The 30-year-old Wilson has his Super Bowl ring, and now it may come down to what works best for himself and his family. He may not have the power to force the Seahawks hand, but a disgruntled quarterback is never a good situation for an organization.

In New York, Wilson would also be equipped with multiple threats to throw to, including Odell Beckham Jr. — a top talent he has never worked with in his seven-year career. The only player that comes close is Doug Baldwin. And as Cowherd points out, head coach Pat Shurmur is offensive-minded where Pete Carroll in Seattle is a defensive coach.

At the end of the day, these are just rumors floating around as the new NFL offseason begins. However, the Giants are exploring all options to find the right replacement for Manning, and Wilson is the exact pedigree they would want under center.
