Terrell Owens on Eli Manning: ‘Odell can’t perform because the quarterback is not performing’

The answer to the Giants’ offensive problems is clear to Terrell Owens: Get Eli Manning off the field so that Odell Beckham Jr. can succeed.

“Odell can’t perform because the quarterback is not performing. So, they should basically replace the quarterback,” the Pro Football Hall of Famer told TMZ Sports this week

Owens took his criticism of Manning a step further, saying the quarterback gets special treatment for his Super Bowl rings and is in fact overrated.

“I mean, if it was anybody else, any other quarterback, he would have already been replaced,” the former wide receiver said. “So, at this point, give someone else an opportunity. “[Eli’s] skills are pretty much eroding and he’s not really giving the guys an opportunity.”

“He’s won a couple of Super Bowls, but I wouldn’t put him in the legendary status,” he added, per TMZ. “I wouldn’t put him in that legend status as of yet … no disrespect.”

Beckham became embroiled in another round of controversy last month when he addressed a similar question. In an interview with ESPN the receiver answered “I don’t know” when asked if the Giants had a problem at QB. That segment aired when the Giants were 1-3; they’re now 1-7.

As for the Giants’ porous offensive line, Owens said elite QBs find a way to win despite a lack of protection.

“You have special players that are behind those not so great lines that can make something out of nothing,” he said. “Eli’s not one of those types of quarterbacks. He needs protection.”

But the Manning backup plan isn’t so simple. On Tuesday, Kyle Lauletta, the second-stringer and fourth-round pick of the Giants in this year’s draft, was arrested on a slew of charges for a traffic violation in New Jersey.

Though Owens has joined many fans in wanting to see another QB get a shot, their patience will continue to be tested while Manning remains the starter.
