The New York Giants Might Have Drafted Chad Wheeler’s Replacement

When the New York Giants drafted George Asafo-Adjei, they probably didn’t even realize just how big he was. The seventh-round doesn’t often present much starting-caliber talent, but every now and then a quality player slips through the cracks.

Asafo-Adjei, a 6’5″, 305-pound offensive tackle joined Big Blue after a four-year career at Kentucky. The right tackle was not only the team captain but earned several accolades portraying his work ethic and effectiveness on the field. He was two-time SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week, starting in 12 games last season.

The New York Giants needed to add more players to the mix at RT:

With the Giants featuring Chad Wheeler at right tackle, it’s only fair they add competition. Wheeler was the 78th ranked tackle in the league in 2018 – the bottom of the barrel for starters.

Asafo-Adjei not only brings a massive frame, but also a knack for development and coachability.

“It’s going be a good thing for me. It’s going to get my football IQ up and be good for me, help me overall and in the long run,” George said, according to the Giants Wire. “It helps getting reps at different positions because you learn all the assignments for all the lineman and why you have to do certain things.”

Big George is used to facing off against top edge rusher in the 2019 NFL Draft, Josh Allen. The top-5 defensive lineman was nearly drafted by the Giants, but quarterback Daniel Jones received the nod instead. However, Asafo-Adjei familiar with playing against premier talent, which will help him translate his talents at the next level.

“I think so. Going against someone like him definitely helps you,” said Asafo-Adjei. “It was good for me and we helped prepare each other for the next level.”

The Kentucky product is extremely physical and has great length, two necessary attributed for offensive tackles. He needs plenty of work in regards to his technique, but if he can refine that aspect of his game, he could be an absolute steal as a seventh-round pick.
