WATCH: Daniel Jones reacts to being drafted by Giants, tells SNY he’s ready to learn under Manning

Daniel Jones is now the Quarterback of the Future for the New York Giants, and couldn’t be any happier that’s the case.

After hearing his name called at No. 6, Jones walked on the stage to grab the jersey he’ll hopefully be wearing for years to come as the man expected to take over for Eli Manning once his long career is up.

The Duke product was been connected to the Giants more and more in the time leading up to the draft, with SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano hearing from one source that Jones was “their guy.”

Well, it’s official and Vacchiano got to talk to Jones about what that meant for the Giants to have faith in him at 6.

“I’m thrilled,” he said. “I’m just excited for the opportunity. I’m very thankful to the Mara family, the Tisch family, Mr. Gettleman, all the coaches that made this decision. I’m just excited to get up there. I’m looking forward to getting to work.”

Giants GM Dave Gettleman is going to follow the “Kansas City Model,” and have Jones sit and learn behind Manning for a full season before he presumably becomes the starter in 2020. That’s the goal at the moment for Jones, and it’s something he wouldn’t mind doing at all in his rookie season.

“I think I’ll definitely learn a lot,” Jones said about sitting behind the two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback in Manning. “I think that’s a tremendous opportunity for a young quarterback. Eli’s a guy whose had a whole lot of success in the NFL, whose been one of the great quarterbacks certainly since I’ve been a kid and watching him as I grew up. So there’s a whole lot to learn there, I look forward to it, and I think that’s an awesome opportunity for a young guy.”

It’s an opportunity many saw coming, but many couldn’t believe once the Giants made the pick. Kentucky DE Josh Allen, a player the Giants could easily have chosen instead to bolster their pass rush, fell down the draft board. But the Giants had their sights set on Jones, and didn’t want to risk him falling down to No. 17.

Jones will now be learning under Manning and head coach Pat Shurmur to be groomed into the team’s next franchise quarterback. Only time will tell if Jones turns out to be Manning 2.0, or a bust at No. 6.
