Why Michael Strahan thinks the Giants should draft Kyler Murray

Legendary Giants defensive lineman Michael Strahan has a plan for how New York should handle its quarterback situation:

Draft Kyler Murray but start Eli Manning.

Speaking on the “Dan Patrick Show” on Thursday, Strahan said he thinks the Giants should draft the Heisman Trophy-winning Murray with the No. 6 pick in April but have him learn under Manning for at least the first half of the 2019 season.

“I’d draft Murray and then I’d let him learn from Eli for the year or eight, nine, 10 games,” Strahan said. “That’s what we did with Kurt Warner.”

Of course, back in 2004, the Giants made Manning their quarterback of the future that spring but started the year with the 33-year-old Warner under center.

Warner started the first nine games of the year, going 5-4 before paving way to Manning, who then started 230 of the Giants’ next 231 games.

“I remember when they put in Kurt,” Strahan said, “we were like, ‘What are they doing? We had a shot with Kurt.’ We have no shot with Eli.”

The Giants passed on Manning’s heir last year when they drafted Saquon Barkley, but this year could be different.

New York could pick a number of quarterbacks with the sixth overall pick, from Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins to West Virginia’s Will Grier to Oklahoma’s Murray, who threw for 4,361 yards and 42 touchdowns for the Sooners.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. predicted the Giants would pick Haskins, who threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Buckeyes this season.

That’s different than Strahan’s strategy.
