Wilson’s Philosophy: The New York Giants face a potential problem in the 2020 NFL Draft

Optimism has been brewing regarding the New York Giants draft pick at No. 4, but it’s very reliant on how the teams around them maneuver. With the Washington Redskins at No. 2 and Detroit Lions at No. 3, the Giants desperately need them to sit still in the draft if they wish to add the most value.

It seems as if Washington will select Chase Young, star pass-rusher out of Ohio State, and the Lions are enamored by cornerback, Jeff Okudah. This would give Big Blue the opportunity to negotiate with the Chargers and Dolphins in a potential trade-back scenario.

However, GM Dave Gettleman has never traded back in the draft, as he believes taking the best player available is simple logic. He has exercised that theory frequently in recent years. However, the Giant have little leverage at this point in time, as the majority of their advantage will come in the moment on draft night when Washington and Detroit are up to bat.

The New York Giants need to think realistically and not optimistically:

The idea that the Giants are in a position to trade back and give away a franchise quarterback to a different team might be overly optimistic. Washington already has Dwayne Haskins, so they can easily trade back to a QB-needy team, but they would be forfeiting Young in the process. Detroit could be after a new passer with Matthew Stafford’s continuous injuries, but I don’t get the feeling they have given up on him just yet.

After taking a look at their quarterback situations, the Giants do seem to be in a stable place, but this cancels out the Miami Dolphins and opens up a trade with the Chargers who could be looking to leap-frog their way to Tua Tagovailoa. If Gettleman were smart, he would call up Miami and inform them of the Chargers’ intentions to trade up and grab their guy, which would then force Miami to make a move. Best case scenario, the Giants can gain a second-round pick in the process and land Isaiah Simmons — we can dream!
